My grandfather shows me how to play on a chromatic harp and I learned day by day... Then there comes my first contact with music from Little Marion Walter Jacobs and Muddy Waters... And wow... The harmonica player was so unbelievable good... So There I knew what I wanted. I bought my first diatonic harp and had to learn playing cross... My lips burned like fire because of playing every day with a marine band.... They were so sharp and cut my lips.... But the sound is the best I can say because I tried several harps... Know I only play the Marine Band Deluxe.... And Blues..... “To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. Largely self taught, he has been making music and writing songs for his own interest and enjoyment ever since. Strayhorn began as a solo project, made possible by affordable multi-track home recording, with the distant dream of finding the right people to play with. In the summer of 2010, after accepting an invitation from an old friend, Algerian band leader Seddik Zebiri, to his Sunday jam at Charlie Wright's in Hoxton, he was fortunate enough to connect with some fine jazz musicians who share his love of the blues. Oli Arlotto – tenor saxophone French born, living in London for many years, Oli is one of the most exciting and versatile horn players on the British jazz scene with a rich and energetic sound. He has toured in Europe with Vincent Arnaldi and numerous other French jazz bands. In 1998 he formed the 5 piece jazz-rock band 804d, touring nationwide and in London. Since then Oli has played with blues artists like Canadian guitarist/singer Drew Barron (ex Buddy Miles` band) and played all over the UK with many excellent jazz musicians and his own quartet. Michael Searl - drums Originally inspired by a Phil Collins concert on TV Michael took up the drums while at senior school and learnt to play by hitting everything in sight. For many years his kit consisted of Argos shopping catalogues, a rubber pad, a wooden chest, and the floor. He has a love of ALL kinds of music - having learnt to play by jamming with whatever was on the radio, or along with old tapes from family members...etc. Currently very busy on the London gig scene, Michael is feeling very Blessed...and in the words of his fellow Jazzaholic, Sir Lance Rose: "I just like it when it makes me wanna Dance" Michele Montolli - bass Born in Verona in 1986. At 8 years old he took up classical violin at the Conservatory in Verona. In his early teens he switched to electric bass and started to play in several local bands (rock, blues, reggae). At the age of 17 he studied classical double bass at the Conservatory in Verona, later taking up jazz double bass in Austria at the University for Music in Graz ( Wayne Darling's class), graduating in 2009. He has performed at the Verona Jazz Festival in 2006 and at many others around Europe and Balkan Penisula. Currently he's based in London and involved in a number of world music and jazz projects - Alejandro & the Magic Tombolinos, Don Menza Italian Quintet, Curiòrkestra. He has one album release for Azzurra Music with Baobab Ensemble – (UZUBUZU). Joe Bickerstaff – keyboards Joe started on violin aged 6 and struggled for five years to keep the damn thing in tune. And then at 11 discovered the piano which he taught himself, without the constraints of tutorship or preconception. The blues was where he started and remains in his very fibre. Branching out into jazz, jazz funk and cocktail to make a living, Joe has travelled the world through music, but is now firmly settled in North London. Glastonbury, Hyatt Singapore, Jumeriah Beach Hotel Dubai and the Langham, Dorchester, Hilton, Vortex and Grosvenor in London are semi-regular venues. All very grand, but Joe's heart remains with the blues and the opportunity to play them with Strayhorn is a true homecoming. After only a short time with The Falcons, Ric was asked to join a well-known local group, Ricky Storm and the Stormcats. During this period, Ric met and studied with Dave Quickmire, drummer with the hottest group in the area, The Jaybirds. The guitarist was Alvin Lee and the bassist, Leo Lyons. Dave left The Jaybirds to get married and insisted Ric audition for the post. Soon after, Ric took over the drum chair. Chick Churchill joined as Road Manager but soon became keyboard player as The Jaybirds became the backing group for a chart vocal act, The Ivy League. In 1968, after an audition at London's Marquee Club under the name The Bluesyard (the only gig the group ever performed under this name) the quartet became the highly successful rock group, Ten Years After. The band toured the world extensively, including completion of 28 tours of the USA in 8 years. The band performed at the 1969 WOODSTOCK FESTIVAL and appeared in the film of the event released the following year. Also in 1970 Ten Years After appeared at the ISLE OF WIGHT FESTIVAL and in the film, which was only finally released in 1995! On several tours of the States, Ric found time to study at Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachussetts with Alan Dawson, then drummer with the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Ric also began teaching young enthusiasts privately when at home between touring commitments. When Ten Years After ceased touring in 1976, Ric turned his attention to running his own Music Publishing, Management and Record Production company. One of the first signings to the publishing company was a song called I Can Prove It, which reached No 21 in the UK National singles chart in 1977. The company also promoted a song into the finals of the Eurovision Song Contest in the same year. During these years, Ric studied tuned percussion as a part time student at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under Gilbert Webster, percussionist with the BBC Radio Orchestra. When Gilbert moved to Manchester, Ric continued his studies with Robert Howes, percussionist with the Wren Orchestra. For about 18 months, commencing in 1980, Ric joined Stan Webb in the thirteenth incarnation of Chicken Shack, a sixties blues group that had a UK number one record "I'd Rather Go Blind" which was sung by Christine Perfect who went on to world fame with Fleetwood Mac. Chicken Shack toured the UK and Europe many times in this short period and made an album for RCA Records "Roadies' Concerto". Ten Years After re-formed again in 1983 for the Marquee Club’s 25th Anniversary During this short "rebirth", Ric managed the group; negotiating contracts, arranging publicity, organising travel and performance budgets and playing the kit! Between 1984 and 1986, Ric managed several up and coming young acts and increased his publishing catalogue. A cover version of "I Can Prove It" was secured, sung by Phil Fearon, which charted at No 8 in the UK Gallup Chart and went on to be a multi-million selling record throughout Europe. Ten Years After re-formed yet again in 1988 and recorded a new album "About Time" in Memphis, Tennessee and spent the next four years touring Europe, the US and selected dates in the UK performing to sell-out crowds. In between tours Ric studied further drum techniques and gained experience of Latin percussion ensemble playing with Trevor Tompkins, Professor of Percussion at the Guildhall and the Royal College of Music. In 1994, Ric formed The Breakers with an old friend, Ian Ellis and together they wrote and produced their first studio album “MILAN”, which was released in July 1995. Along with tours of the UK and Europe, The Breakers were guests with Bryan Adams and Bonnie Raitt, on NBC Super Channel’s “Talking Blues” programme that aired in Europe in March 1996. Another of Ric’s winning projects around the middle nineties was the production of a series of ambient albums, the most successful of which was “Spirit of Africa” This album has sold over 50,000 units in Europe and is due for re-launch next year.Ric worked again with Ten Years After, touring and performing at Festivals in America, Brazil and Europe between 1995 and 1999. More recently he was finding “gems” of “lost” recordings of the band, re-mastering them, writing sleeve notes and helping the companies involved re-issue and promote the products. Ric recorded an album in Nashville, USA in October 2001 with Leo Lyons and Texan guitar slinger, Vince Converse, due for release in the near future. One track from those sessions is included on “From Clarksdale to Heaven”, a tribute to veteran blues man John Lee Hooker, which also includes contributions by guitarists Jeff Beck and Gary Moore. Married with two young children Ric lives in the Derbyshire Dales, where he runs a highly successful holiday business, is writing his autobiography, a novel and still finds time to help youngsters learn to play percussion instruments! Ric plays : Drums, Tympani, L A Percussion, Piano, Vibraphone & Associated Tuned Percussion Date and place of birth: 20th October 1945 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire “To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This Vancouver based band is made up of Brad Curtis on vocal and bass, Bart Dwyer on guitar and Gordon Cole on guitar. The 14 track release opens with the title track, The Hoodoo Shake, which has a straight up blues rock feel and ethereal slide work behind the vocals. Hey Stranger, another blues rock track has a pretty good hook for potential airplay and some tasty guitar riffing for the guitar guys. Forty Years gets a bit more grimy with some heavy drums and chorded sliding under lead guitar work. Jazzy Hippie takes a little bit of a different turn. It has organ under the band and an unusual melody which is attractive. It reminds me of something that I've heard but I can't put my finger on it exactly. In any case, this is a cool track. Breathless takes the next step away from the blues and into a modern era music with heavier overtones. Heavy bass lines and and monotone vocals with a driving beat and swirling lead guitars would certainly appeal to the garage crowd. Number is another track that is in this same vein. It doesn't sound the same as Breathless but is definitely from the same train of thought. It is a stretch from blues but well done none the less. This is an interesting recording, difficult to classify as blues but that may well interest a number of my readers wanting something with a bit more bite to their music.

Produced by the Black Crowes’ Rich Robinson, and featuring a rare duet with Buffy Sainte-Marie, the album was recorded at 16 Tons studio, Nashville, Tennessee, making it Sandi’s fourth album following 2010’s critically acclaimed Merchants and Thieves.
Sandi's new song, Sun Comes Crashing Down will be available as a free download from www.sandithom.com on Monday May 21st.
Flesh and Blood is a significant release, being Sandi’s sophomore studio album, released solely by her independent label Guardian Angels Records (distributed in the UK by Nova through Universal Music Operations).
The highly anticipated new album radiates the raunchy blues rock bravado of the opening track Help Me, followed by the country-flavoured Leadbelly classic In The Pines. The album also features the strutting, clavinet-led Stormy Weather; and the emotionally compelling finale Lay Your Burden Down.
The album features an all-star ensemble led by Black Crowes Rich Robinson, drummer Steve Gorman and fellow Black Crowe and widely travelled session guitarist Audley Freed, respected Nashville stars Mike Webb (keys/Dobro) and James Haggerty (bass) complete the line-up with special guest performances from Rolling Stones collaborator, saxophonist Bobby Keys, and stunning duet with the legendary singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie on her 1992 classic The Big Ones Get Away.

To celebrate the “Flesh And Blood” release, on Thursday September 20th, Sandi will perform an intimate concert at London’s Gibson Guitar Studios (29-35 Rathbone St, W1T 1NJ).
Fans who want to attend can apply for strictly limited free-of-charge guest list places by emailing their name and address to enquiries@guardianangelsrecords.com.
The lucky applicants will then be contacted prior to the event with further information. Her vocal abilities are showcased really well, as is her guitar work, and harp playing. I think Sandi’s made a great record. It was a joy to work with her.”
Legendary classic rock producer Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, The Black Crowes, Joe Bonamassa) also mixed two tracks, Sun Comes Crashing Down and a duet with Buffy Sainte-Marie on the latter’s classic song, The Big Ones Get Away.
“Sandi’s writing is fantastic,” says Shirley, “and her singing is wonderful. Sun Comes Crashing Down has all the right ingredients to be a hit.”
The intriguingly titled I Love You Like A Lunatic, is based on her “life-changing” love affair with superstar blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa. The couple have been together three years now, living and loving on and off the road. Sandi likens it to a modern-day Johnny Cash and June Carter fairy-tale. “My life just turned crazy,” says Sandi. “Yet that’s what everybody wants, that insane kind of love that utterly consumes you.”
Sandi feels that Flesh and Blood is her coming of age album. “All I ever want to do is write songs that connect with people,” says Sandi. “With this album I’ve finally found a place where I can make the very best music I can achieve. The people that only know me from Punk Rocker won’t recognise me on this album. But they are going to find out another side of me.”

<iframe allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ZY-TdrNeUlA" Playing resonator blues and stamping on a homemade amplified plank o' wood just for the sheer hell of it. He combines the influence of the Delta and Hill Country Blues of Mississippi with a contemporary alternative edge. Since his first gig in December 2010 Half Deaf Clatch has played over 50 shows, including The East Yorkshire Custom Bike Rally (once on the main stage, then as an invited special guest in the VIP enclosure), The Springboard Music festival, The Trinity Music Festival and recently played two extremely well recieved sets at The Beverley Blues Festival. 2012 has got off to a flying start for Hulls favourite slide stomper, having gotten through to the Newcastle heat of the New Brunswick Battle of the Blues it can only be onwards and upwards from here. This is an interesting recording combining Persian and American Gospel/Blues/Jazz styling and coming up with something quite different. Vahdat, native to Iran and McClain have joined forces on melodies written by Vahdat. The recording opens with A Deeper Tone Of Longing, a ballad that actually puts me in mind of a James Bond soundtrack. On When You Came the music is hauntingly beautiful and McClains voice seems to be perfect for such a task. Vahat who also sings provides a stark eastern contrast to McClains robust voice. There is a particularly clean jazz style guitar solo adding more contrast to an already warm track. Nobody begins with Vahdat singing in her native language to be followed by McClain in English and making it sound like a traditional ballad. Two Jewels to me in English sounds quite reminiscent of Stevie Wonder from the late 70's but when translated to the flip in Farsi it takes on a totally different but inviting sound. We Are Sailors begins with Vahdat and has the sound of a folk song but then McClain comes in and it takes on the characteristics of a gospel track. Very interesting juxtaposition of ideas. Refugee Of Love again starts sounding like a native folk track but when McClain starts his portion it is transformed to a blues track with gospel overtones. Very nice! Coat Of Dreams and Silk brings the two cultures the closest with strong eastern overtones throughout and a lesser shift when McClain takes over his passage. This is a very powerful recording and one that will easily find mass appeal among jazz, vocal and some blues fans.

Instrumentem tym zainteresował się w wieku 15 lat, rok później 1993 doskonalił umiejętności na warsztatach bluesowych w Zakrzewie. W 1995 roku nawiązał kilkuletnią współpracę z bydgoską grupą Green Grass, czego efektem były wydawnictwa Tańcz z nami (2001) i One Man Band (2004). Podczas pobytu w USA jego harmonijkowe umiejętności docenił sam Bob Margolin, wieloletni gitarzysta zespołu Muddy’ego Watersa, zapraszając do wspólnego jamowania. W 2003 roku wraz z gitarzystą Jarosławem Tioskowem i muzykami grupy Szulerzy złożył muzyczny hołd swemu harmonijkowemu mentorowi – Ryszardowi “Skibie” Skibińskiemu, soliście grupy Kasy Chorych, nagrywając w 20. rocznicę jego śmierci płytę Michał Cielak Kielak — Tribute to Ryszard Skiba Skibiński. Dobrze przyjęty album przypieczętował akces do zespołu Kasa Chorych, którego, po latach okazjonalnej współpracy, stał się pełnoprawnym członkiem. Obecnie poza macierzystą grupą regularnie występuje w projektach: Harmonijkowy Atak, Kulisz & Kielak, Roman Puchowski & Michał Kielak, Riedel & Kielak. This is recorded live at the Rfes Blues festival and documents not only the performance but the tour itself. It shows beautiful shots of the Turkey scenery and shares their culture... "The Blues Is Everywhere". The DVD opens with Solid Gold Cadillac, a solid piano boogie. Mitch is a great singer and entertainer as well as piano player. Down Boy Down is a hot jumper and Mitch gets the band hopping! Amadee Castenell plays some awesome sax solos on this track and it's obvious the band is having a great time! Next Up is Mojo Mambo, a popular New Orleans party track. Mitch flows easily between piano styles and this track would make you believe he was born right there in the Bayou. Boogie Woogie Bar-B-Q, another jump style boogie is up next and Mitch is turning on the heat. The man is animated and it's hard not to smile watching his performance. Castenell takes another nice break on this track and this time Adam Gabriel also gets a chance to smoke the strings on his Strat! This band, also including Cornell Williams on bass and Larry Vann on drums is incredibly tight. I Got A New Car is a real swing blues and just has that great lope. Castenell smokes another beautiful sax solo ... this guy is really hot! What Can I Do is a cool jump blues giving Gabriel a nice opening to play some hot guitar riffs and keeps the crowd on their feet. Queen Bee is done swing style and again Gabriel plays a sweet guitar solo. Some lower octave playing really punches the upper fret squeezing! There are numerous shots and videos inter dispersed throughout this film and it helps to add to the viewers appreciation that this film is is being shot in a climate much unlike the US. The country is very receptive and the crowd is obviously really enjoying the opportunity to see this great show. Crawfishin', another jump blues keeps Woods on his feet and has hot riffs from but Castenell and Gabriel. Long, Lean and Lanky a rockin' blues keeps the heat up and Gabriel spits out another hot solo on guitar. Woods is really working this crowd and having a ball playing the 88's. Third Degree finds Williams leading off a real slow traditional blues track. Gabriel plays some absolutely scorching lead work on this track. Bassist Williams has a beautiful voice and actually fronts this track. Castenell absolutely kills his solo and leads up to another scorcher by Gabriel! The band gets back into the groove with Rocket 88 and leading right into In The Night/Lambaya Puf De (Described as a Barry White like song in turkey). This extended track gives each band member the opportunity to shine with nice solos. The set is wrapped with House Of Blues Lights, a perfect closer of this set. Mitch Woods obviously enjoys his "job" and makes sure that all of the concert goers do too! A natural entertainer. The extra footage showed impromptu performances with Kenny Neal Band who was traveling with them, and the band in local settings and engaging with local customs. It also gave insights into life on the road and the band personnel. Aerial and street shots captured glimpses of Independence day. Also included is a photographic slideshow which is quite enjoyable and aesthetically beautiful. Alan Nimmo

“Softly softly” is not a maxim that King King are familiar with. Since surging into life less than twelve months ago they have barely stopped for breath, and their electrifying sound and scorching live shows have generated more of a thunderous roar than a buzz. .... This band certainly knows how to make an entrance. Fronted by charismatic bluesman Alan Nimmo, their exhilarating debut at last year’s Monaghan Blues Festival created such a stir that it prompted organizer Somhairle MacConghail to state: “King King aren’t just playing the festival. Word is that King King ARE the festival”. With a reception like this there’s little surprise that the phone has been ringing off the hook ever since, and after a frenetic winter tour the lads are currently gearing up for a hectic summer of gigs and festival appearances. .... With outstanding reviews and a diary fit to burst, you’d be forgiven for thinking that King King had enough to keep them occupied for a moment or two. You’d be wrong. Apparently imbued with sufficient energy to power a small town, the band has also found time to get into the studio, the result being their debut EP ‘Broken Heal’. Produced alongside the team behind the Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs and the Editors (to name but a few), the EP instantly received a gleaming review from Blues Matters Magazine, including remarks on it’s “emotive lyrics”, “heart wrenching guitar solos” and “stirring guitar work”. The band had barely left the studio when they began to receive airplay on radio stations in the UK, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, India, Canada and the USA. Meanwhile, organizers of the renowned Blues On The Farm festival laid their hands on a copy and were so impressed that they made room for King King - despite having already filled the bill for this year’s event. .... Thundering on, the summer will see King King descending on the celebrated Maryport Blues Festival, where they will follow Jethro Tull onto the main stage at an event which will attract some 22,000 blues aficionados. Then it’s off to headline at the Shetland Blues Festival, squeezing in some European appearances (including another headline slot at the Hookrock Festival) along the way. .... Pretty impressive stuff for a band less than a year old. So what’s at the root of all this commotion? Well, aside from seemingly boundless impetus, the band is certainly not lacking in pedigree. .... Leading the charge is the aforementioned Alan, a front man famed almost as much for his contagious energy as his dazzling guitar work. Widely known across the UK and Europe for his pivotal role with the award-winning Nimmo Brothers, Alan’s full-blooded style, technical brilliance and impassioned vocals combine to hit all the right buttons and reach spots that many others can only aspire to. .... Bringing up the rear we have Lindsay Coulson. Don’t be fooled by the wry smile – beneath his unruffled exterior lurks a powerhouse of punchy, fat bass who’s musical career has seen him take to the stage with such well regarded blues acts as Aynsley Lister. He has also been a regular in the Nimmo Brother’s lineup, and this history with Alan has resulted in a dynamic musical chemistry which is evident in both songwriting and performance. .... New to the King King fold is Bennett Holland on keyboard. An excitable advocate of funky low-down blues, Bennett has worked with a plethora of names including Groove Armada and the critically adored Richard Hawley. A compelling and highly skilled player, rumor has it that there are no arms beneath Bennett’s sleeves – only more fingers. .... Running with the King King ethos that more is always more when it comes to talent, this summer’s audiences will also be treated to a special guest in the form of Craig Blundell, recently described by Drummer magazine as “one of the UK's most versatile and staggeringly talented players”. A hugely gifted and resourceful musician, Craig is also clearly a dynamo at juggling – aside from live performances, the last year has seen him in constant demand for worldwide drumming clinics, recording sessions, instructional books and even a documentary. .... With this lineup of top-shelf musicians, King King could only draw their inspiration from the best in the business, ranging from legendary greats such as BB King and Albert Collins to the shining lights of contemporary blues like Joe Bonamassa and John Mayer. As well as working as an acoustic artist, Marco is most known for his 7 piece band 'Marco Goldsmith's Blue Heat'. Blue Heat released two original albums to critical acclaim in the mid 90's; 'Marooned' and 'Irresistible Behaviour'. 1995 Marco won Best Male Artist and their first album 'Marooned' won the Australian Blues Album of the Year. In 1996, their second album 'Irresistible Behaviour' also won the 'Australian Blues Band of the Year’. Opening for BB KING (Melbourne Entertainment Centre '97) being a fitting final gig for a driven band that toured Australia extensively. These days, 'Blue Heat' re-groups for a handful of select gigs each year. From there Marco fell into a roots, blues, celtic, country, acoustic, singer-songwriter swamp, having also toured and released two acoustic solo albums 'Hold On' and 'Stomping Ground' during that period. MGB by design is like a blues time machine. Marco has wanted to make a blues album that taps into the styles and influences of what he was playing during the late '70s to the early 90's, reminiscent of great acts like The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Clapton, Duke Robillard, Albert King, SRV and others. Most of the original tunes on this album were written during that period. Marco's current outfit 'MARCO GOLDSMITH BAND' is a three piece electric blues animal and MGB's self-titled first album is guaranteed to saviour the appetite of any true raw blue's lover. Please enjoy the simple honesty of this live blues album. Oh! ...and don't forget, TURN IT UPTO 11' Marco Goldsmith Band (MGB) winner, "Best Debut Album Of The Year" Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society Victorian/Tasmanian Blues Music Awards 2012 — with Kare Berg and Marco Goldsmith. Inspired by artists such as Junior Walker, Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder and Clarence Carter, he will take you back to the days when vocals were the center point of music. He is also a lot more than just a voice. His guitar playing covers a wide range of styles – pleasing blues and funk fans alike. From the moment he hits the stage, his contagious energy and charisma combine for a sound that is truly original. You’ll be tapping your feet within the first few notes. The Band: LITTLE FRANKIE THIFFAULT – TENOR SAX Considered as being one of the best blues sax players in Montreal, Little Frankie has won the Quebec Lys Blues Award for Musical Performance three times. Live is where he shines the most – from stages across North and South America to European festivals, his growling tones and energy are next to none. His unique and authentic sound is a tribute to sax legends J.T. Brown, Junior Walker, David “Fathead” Newman and King Curtis. MAT “MOOSE” MOUSSEAU – BARITONE SAX Moose has been a permanent member of the award-winning Kevin Mark Blues Band since 2004. With several albums and countless live performances both locally and abroad under his belt, he now brings his big, fat, greasy sound to the Ben Racine Band. KEVIN MARK – ELECTRIC AND STRING BASS Kevin Mark is one of the most decorated blues artists in eastern Canada – receiving over 20 awards and nominations since 1998. He’s headlined numerous festivals and has opened for such blues luminaries as Bryan Lee, Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials, Toni Lynn Washington, Junior Watson, Lonnie Brooks, Big Jack Johnson and Jack de Keyzer. With The Ben Racine Band, he brings in decades of live experience along with his solid, grooving bass playing. His main influences are Willie Dixon, Ronnie James Weber, Kedar Roy, Larry Taylor, Aston “Family Man” Barrett and Duck Dunn. NICKY ESTOR – DRUMS A professional musician since the age of 16, Nicky has backed several international blues artists, notably: Nico Wayne Toussaint, Shawn Pittman, Preston Hubbard and Sonny Boy Terry. Influenced by old-school drummers Fred Below and Richard Innes, Nicky brings his ’50s-inspired blues and R&B drumming to the heart of the Ben Racine Band. Claude forges his live sound on the back of looping technology which allows him to create a band vibe without the band. This approach has seen this fiercely independent artist build an audience for his music globally with the release of his three home-made albums. He’s also built his own dome house and studio from the ground up, and pimped out his tour van with a shower and bar (a great move when you consider how much time he spends on the road).

I Love Hate You is Claude Hay’s brand new third album and was recorded and mixed at Vader Studios (his home studio, with a huge back-lit Darth Vader mask overseeing production), and continues Claude’s move away from traditional blues and back to his love of rock – both alternative and hard – with his childhood love of 80s rock starting to show its influence. As on his last CD, he pays tribute to one of his influences; this time it’s a roaring take of The Beatles’ “Come Together,” which sits quite nicely among the album’s 11 other original songs. The signature slide is still there, along with the four-on-the-floor rhythms and gut-bucket sensibility, but new to the mix on album number three is an increased focus on guitar riffage, along with a more refined approach to songwriting and production.

This new release sees Claude in a rare collaborative mood on three tracks, with the addition of drums on one tune, the rhythm section of Sydney band Chase The Sun on another and a guest cello on yet a third song. The new CD was mastered by Australia’s acclaimed William Bowden. I Love Hate You is a concept album – dealing with the things Claude loves, hates and loves to hate. From loved ones, great gigs, motor vehicles and treacherous trans-continental bus rides, bad customer service and indifferent radio programmers.

I Love Hate You follows up Deep Fried Satisfied (2010), a very successful album for the indie artist that allowed him to get a foot in the door overseas. While promoting the launch of the album in the USA, Claude performed on National Public Radio and Deep Fried Satisfied promptly shot to number nine on the Billboard blues charts in response. The album went on to rank number five on Amazon’s top ten blues albums of 2010, with the track, “Miss You So,” polling third in the Best Blues Song of the Year category.

Claude’s affection for New York-style pizza was the inspiration for that album’s lead track, “Get Me Some,” which won the Australian Blues Music (Chain) Award for Best Song of 2011. A track about the aggravation caused by faulty printers, “How Can You Live with Yourself,” hit number one on the Australian radio chart around the same time. Kiss The Sky (2007), Claude Hay’s debut lo-fi masterpiece which began his solo career, still sells like hotcakes whenever Claude Hay performs at festivals and venues around the world.

Claude Hay will be touring in support of the new CD, with fall dates scheduled for Europe, followed by the USA in the spring of 2013, as well as numerous shows throughout Australia. Trio that bet on the more austere, stark and virulent side of Rhythm & Blues, leaving apart flourishes and musical fanfare to focus on the interior of this style.
